1 Samuel 18
David’s rise reveals YHWH’s presence with him, while Saul’s fear turns public honor and family ties into threats.
David remains in Saul’s service after his victory over the Philistine, and Jonathan binds himself to David in a covenant of love. As David gains military success and public praise, Saul grows angry and fears losing his kingdom. He tries to kill David with a spear, then uses the prospect of marriage to his daughters to expose David to enemy violence. David survives, marries Michal, and gains honor, while Saul’s hostility hardens.
Genesis shares the theme of YHWH’s presence with a servant whose work prospers amid danger, seen in Joseph’s story. The covenant between Jonathan and David continues into 2 Samuel, where David shows kindness to Jonathan’s son because of his bond with Jonathan.

Why did Jonathan give David his robe and weapons?
Jonathan gives David his robe, clothing, and weapons just after they make a covenant. The narrator ties that covenant to Jonathan’s love for David. These costly gifts express the strength of their bond. The chapter does not state that Jonathan is handing over his claim to the throne.
What does an evil spirit from God mean in 1 Samuel 18?
Verse 10 describes an evil spirit coming from God upon Saul before Saul throws his spear at David. The account places the spirit under God’s authority and also says YHWH had departed from Saul. It does not explain the mechanics of the spirit’s action or excuse Saul’s violence.
Why did Saul demand Philistine foreskins from David?
Saul demands one hundred Philistine foreskins as the marriage payment for Michal, presenting it as vengeance against the king’s enemies. The narrator exposes his hidden aim: David’s death in battle. David and his men kill two hundred Philistines and bring the required evidence, so Saul gives him Michal.
