Psalm 61
Psalm 61 moves from an overwhelmed heart’s cry for shelter to confidence in God’s protection and a pledge of praise.
A speaker with an overwhelmed heart cries to God for help, describing his call as coming from the end of the earth. The heading attributes the psalm to David and assigns it to the chief musician with a stringed instrument; the occasion is unnamed. Remembering God’s past protection, the speaker seeks shelter in God’s presence. He then speaks of his vows and the king’s enduring life, closing with a pledge of praise and daily faithfulness.
Isaiah shares Psalm 61’s portrayal of God as a refuge, while Proverbs shares its strong-tower imagery for divine protection. Ruth also speaks of seeking refuge under God’s wings, linking the psalm’s shelter image with trust in the God of Israel.

What does the rock in Psalm 61:2 mean?
The rock portrays a place of safety above the speaker’s danger and beyond his own reach. He asks God to lead him there while his heart is overwhelmed. The next verse identifies God as his refuge and strong tower, grounding the image in God’s proven protection.
Who is the king in Psalm 61?
The heading attributes the psalm to David, so the king may be David speaking of himself in the third person. The verses could also serve as prayer for a Davidic successor. The text does not name the king; it places his enduring reign under God’s preserving loving kindness and truth.
