2 Chronicles 5
The covenant ark enters the completed temple, and YHWH’s glory fills the house beyond the priests’ capacity to serve.
Solomon has finished YHWH’s house and gathers Israel’s leaders in Jerusalem to bring the covenant ark from David’s city into the temple. During the feast in the seventh month, priests place the ark beneath the cherubim in the most holy place. Sacrifices accompany the procession, and singers and trumpeters join in praise. As they proclaim YHWH’s goodness and enduring loving kindness, a cloud fills the house, preventing the priests from continuing their service.
1 Kings recounts the same transfer of the ark and the cloud filling Solomon’s temple, while Exodus shares the covenant tablets and the glory cloud filling the tabernacle. 1 Chronicles names the same musical leaders, linking this gathering with David’s arrangements for worship.

What was inside the ark in 2 Chronicles 5?
Verse 10 says the ark contained only the two tablets Moses placed there at Horeb, where YHWH made a covenant with Israel after the departure from Egypt. The account identifies these tablets as the ark’s contents when the priests brought it into Solomon’s temple.
Why couldn’t the priests minister in 2 Chronicles 5?
The priests could not stand to minister because a cloud filled the temple, which the text identifies with YHWH’s glory. This happened as the singers and trumpeters praised God together. The account describes God’s overwhelming presence without explaining the cloud’s physical properties or making music a formula for producing it.
