1 Chronicles 23
David prepares for worship beyond his reign by ordering the Levites’ service around YHWH’s settled dwelling in Jerusalem.
David is old and has made Solomon king over Israel. He gathers Israel’s leaders, priests, and Levites, then assigns the Levites their work for YHWH’s house. The chapter lists their family divisions and distinguishes Aaron’s priestly line from the other Levites. With Israel at rest and Jerusalem established as the place of worship, carrying the tabernacle is no longer their task. Their duties now include helping the priests and maintaining the rhythm of thanksgiving and praise.
Numbers and Exodus share the Levites’ sanctuary service and the distinct priestly role of Aaron’s descendants. Solomon’s succession also appears in 1 Kings, while 2 Chronicles describes Levites supporting priests in temple worship and taking part in praise.

Why does 1 Chronicles 23 mention both thirty and twenty as the age for Levite service?
Verse 3 records a count of Levites aged thirty and older. Verses 24–27 describe service beginning at twenty, according to David’s last instructions. The passage places this change alongside the end of carrying the tabernacle and the duties of a settled sanctuary, without explaining the precise reason for the lower age.
What is the difference between priests and Levites in 1 Chronicles 23?
Aaron and his descendants are set apart for priestly duties, including burning incense and blessing in YHWH’s name. The other Levites assist Aaron’s sons in the service of God’s house. Moses’ descendants are counted among these Levites; descent from Moses does not place them in Aaron’s priestly line.
